Woke up at 2am, thinking, "no, don't be awake *now*" and thankfully, fell back asleep. Damned alarm went off at 5:15, stayed in bed until 5:30, planning to hit the road at 5:45. This was not going to be a "dress for success" day. I figured those around me would probably see me at my worst in other ways, might as well get the "just outta bed" look to complete the picture. Went into the kitchen and found this (what a great kid, huh?)

Get to the beach. Damn it's early. Last time I was up this early on a Saturday I hadn't gone to bed. Didn't stop for coffee as I knew WCs would be few and far between. Check in, find my Pod, doing the "one stroke at a time" mantra in my head. Look across, can't see Long Island. Still. Ugh. Thanking god the storm hit Friday night.

Meet the podmates. Cool group of guys, Jenny and me the only fems. Kayaks are all labeled with our names but of course we realized that after we had all packed our stuff into the wrong ones. I ended up crossing in Podmate Paul's boat, more on that later. Gil was in mine, so I *knew* it would get across safely!

Here's a shot of Pod 8 Merrill Lynch (go bulls) getting ready:

All of a sudden Miles and Scott are charging over and Scott is saying "Eileen Scully!" and I'm thinking "holy crap I forgot something or the sheriff is here with a warrant for my arrest" but no, Scott has his hand out and is congratulating me on being the top fundraiser for my pod ! YAY! That pumped me up .... thanks guys !

So we get instructions to line our kayaks up in as straight a line as we can, hold our paddles in our right hands (the *other* right, I needed so much more coffee) and face West for the photo. But WHOA big noise and in swoop these helicopters over around above and beside us taking photos - so cool! Can't wait to see those !

Shirleen Safety Queen has a bull horn (hey wait wasn't I supposed to get one of those?) on a lifeguard chair and is counting down the minutes until launch. We are apparently in the 8th group of a total field of 9 to launch, so we're starting off at the back of the pack. That's cool, I just don't want to drop back and be DEAD LAST. I know, I know, all that crap about just finishing is an accomplishment, and the lowest GPA West Point grad getting an award just for finishing, but sorry, I am a Scully and last is unacceptable. So there's some extra motivation. Here's the view from where we were of all the paddlers lined up, ready to go. Very very cool.

The national anthem gets us all in the right frame of mind, I wish I knew who sang it as she had a lovely voice and hit those high notes like a pro! She's on the lifeguard chair holding the bullhorn in this photo. You can see my patriotic pod mate Matt singing his lungs out too. Ploverville are nowhere to be found because they dont know the words.

And then, before you could say "home of the brave" - they started launching ! Here's what it looked like from my spot on the beach - particularly love the pod going off into the sun glare. The plan was to launch multiple pods at a time, but stagger their positions on the beach. These KFAC folks really thought about this! I was very impressed. And apologies for the quality of most of these photos - those waterproof disposables are great but they have limitations.

Pod 9 - Ploverville - AKA the UN - were right next to us, and I tell ya, these guys DEFINE team spirit! I'll admit to a little pang of Pod Envy. They had all this crap tied to their kayaks, which I am sure the fish and such will be happy to digest over the next week or so - but they looked *hysterical* out there. Just a great group of folks that could not stop laughing. Even brought their own megaphones. Where are those pics guys ? Send and I'll post here!

Jen and Gil, pre-launch smooch moment. Let's go !!

And here it is - the view from my cockpit. Fired up and still can't see Long Island. Head for the stacks - that's all I remember from the 45 minute navigation session a few weeks ago. I couldnt remember what they said was "bad" and I figured there were enough people paddling in front of me that I could just follow. Remember that I said that - just follow.

Here's Jenny, feeling strong, looking great, still laughing ! (as a matter of fact, Jen is always laughing - isn't that why we adore her?)

Podmate Matt looking like a pro all tricked out in EMS gear - and podmate Walter sneaking into frame.

Great shot of Jen with that little lighthouse behind her. Great light, great smile! Too bad the photo quality isn't a little better but oh well.

Shot from a little farther out - you can see the lighthouse wayyyy in the background of this one. We are making progress!!

I had to stop turning around. Just head toward those stacks, follow the paddlers in front of you. Dig deep and get there. It was a beautiful morning, as you can see here ---

Then it started really getting hard. I started thinking I was crazy for signing up for this. Who was I kidding, I am no athlete! Much better from the spectator side. Fighting strong wind and currents with no respite in site. Realized I was drifting much farther east than anyone else in my pod. Than anyone else for that matter. And nothing I could do would get me closer to the rest of them. Slight panic, huge frustration. Heavy torque on the arms to try to at least stay where I was and not drift any farther east. This is everyone else to my right.

There was this <del>asshole</del> dude paddling backwards. What, are you freakin kidding me? You can't really see him because it was hard taking the pic while I was giving him the finger.

Ok now these are my "feel my pain" shots. They tell exactly how I was feeling out there. Sense the loneliness, the agony, the desperation? And you are right, you still can't see Long Island. Ugh. The soundtrack to this part would have Pod Leader Eric's voice yelling "Eileen! Bring it in a little!" and the bubble over my head would say, well, you probably know what it would say.

Let me just interject here with a shout out to John, Jeff and Greg who are swimming these waters on saturday - after being out there in a hard-to-sink craft and feeling the currents, the wakes, the waves, the wind - you guys are HARD CORE and deserve some serious respect. Craziness.

About this point, I came to the realization that if I was going to stop and shoot photos for y'all, I was going to go even more off course, which means a longer duration to the misery of it all. I didn't even stop for hydration. I also realized that one of the chase boats (love you!) was staying pretty close to me on my left (east) side, trying to pen me in. Were they taking bets on me ? I'll never know, but I was grateful for your presence. VERY grateful. Don't have a shot of them (see above for why).

Then, out of nowhere, appeared my superhero. Now those of you who *really* know me, know my weakeness for superheros. It all started back in the late 70s with Christopher Reeve and Superman. Saturday it was Paul. Came out of nowhere to shepherd me to Long Island. Paul, my hero, my podmate. Just took it upon himself to make sure I was safe and ok. What a guy. I secretly wondered if he just wanted to make sure the kayak with his name on it made it across.

So now I'm laughing again, back in the game, sharing my frustration and getting back to the "good place." Honestly, without Paul's intervention, I never would have made it. Incredibly grateful, and he has my loyalty for life. Seriously. So fast forward in blogger time, and WHOO HOO - looky here - we FINALLY could see the stacks ! For REAL !! (click the photo to enlarge and see the STACKS)

Talk about wind in the sails. Even though the view of the stacks seemed to not change for a looooooooong time. They didn't get any closer, but they didnt get any farther away either. But the best part was, Paul pointed out to me that *we* hadnt changed course, but all the other kayakers were veering in our direction! So (he says) we were the ones on course the whole time (yeah, right, but I'll buy). And I had someone very cool to laugh with, who I learned was actually capable of rescue should I need it. So another thing I learned is that if you drop enough F bombs while kayaking, God sends you your very own superhero. At least that's what the God who loves *me* does. Takes me to the brink, pushes me a bit beyond my capabilities, then sends in the reinforcements. Very cool. So no more photos for a while, but this next one HAD to happen.

Just as we got the beach into view, and could see some of our fellow paddlers waiting on the beach, we pass this gorgeous boat with beer drinking fun guys cheering us on - we were seriously almost there. Being the wallflower that I am, I yelled back to them "Throw me a COLDIE for chrissakes!" and next thing I knew, fun boat crew is tossing us Buds ! How awesome is THAT? LOVE you guys !! And you looked damn good out there ..... (and my weakness for sailors doesnt hurt)

overheard: "we're throwing the kayakers beers!"

So here's Paul, toasting with the beer, and look at those stacks NOW baby! Almost to dry land .... I cannot tell you how much I just wanted to get out of that boat.

And who knew those brainiacs at Old Town built their kayaks with cup holders ?

Here's the shot you've been dying to see - me pulling into shore. Once we got off the boat, they loaded us into buses to get back to the lot where our cars were parked. I couldnt wait to get home and shower. I also knew if I stopped moving, I would never get to the post-event party. As it was, I hardly made it.

Quick recap of the party. I was dead. We ate lobsters. Katy was my date and possible DD, Fred and Jo-Ann came with Collin who gave me the greatest smile and hug. Drinks were free and generous and I only had one. Here's Terry O and cute Carter OO trying to drum up excitement for the auction. We were dead, man. Spent. Beat.

Kate Berg, looking lovely, who stayed on dry land. Smart lady. Check out the crustaceans behind her. There were thousands of them. I am not taking any weather reports seriously until Thursday.

KFAC just sent this out to all participants:
Thanks to Old Town and GQ: Old Town has generously donated some of the sweet KFAC VI Cayuga kayaks to the people that raise the most funds between 12:01am EST Monday 24 July and 11:59pm EST Friday July 28th. The high committee will select the winners, with the help of the database. And we reserve the right to give out more than one! That's it. For once, starting late has paid off! Game on!

Hmmmm. Thanks to all of you, I had an incredibly fast start, and was thrilled to go into the Kickoff Party at #1, and hold that position for quite a few weeks. If any of you have any gas left in the car that's great, but I am not in this to win a kayak for myself, rather (as you all know) I am in this to improve my own personal fitness and support the KFAC charities. And my personal goals have been reached - you've come out to support me like I never would have believed. I honestly was hoping to raise $1000 - not $3000! and 130 smoke free days .....

This week is about healthy eating, no cocktails (had a beer at Pepes last night, that's it until the beach party), low impact strength conditioning. Yes I am nervous, excited, all that, but crossing is NOT optional.

Here's the big question - after this event, what's next ?

one week to go !

Hard to believe. One week from right now I will be in the water, probably swearing at myself, but making my way to Long Island. Just went back to read my first post and first email requesting donations. You guys are really great. Beyond my wildest expectations. Today I will start to write all of your names on my crossing shirt. Of course leaving room for those of you still to donate :) - remember, $150 gets you a ticket to the beach party. And I have a feeling these KFAC guys know how to party.

Additonal Motivation for the Girls and Gays:
Apparently [this dude] will be making the crossing, and will attend the beach party. Of course with my PC down, I missed a lot of the info prior, but thankfully I got there on time and no one was the wiser. And who do I see upon arrival but sweet Sophia from The Kickoff That Kicked Ass! This girl is everywhere, I swear.

Then all the other Kickoff buds started showing up, and I even got to make some new friends (I *know* - imagine that!!) - including the "Pod That Should Be Named the United Nations" - AKA Pod 9 (a motley crew of multi-nationals, the accents of which were beyond my recognition) who are in second place in fundraising. Way to go guys! Too bad they'll miss the after party since they'll still be paddling to Long Island .... hee hee ....

Since this thing started at 9am in Norwalk, and I worked the night before, it was all I could do to get myself there in one piece on time, of course the camera didn't make the journey. But the best parts of the day couldn't be captured on film anyway. Such as :

- me and pod mate Gil vying for last one to wet exit "no really you can go first"

- the awesome hysterically funny ENT (sorry I forgot your name husband-of-Elizabeth) who talked to us about all the gear we need to successfully make the journey

...what I will bring - sunscreen, CLIF bars - and Katy and I have been sampling all the flavors these last few weeks - and Crunchy Peanut Butter is my #1, at least three liters of water, and paddle gloves

- the hecklers from Pod UN as I self-dunked "BLOGGER! BLOGGER!" - ok guys dont make me laugh when I go under

- that damn Audrey Yu (she's a freakin pro paddler) ending up in my group and making me feel like a *true* rookie

- trying to remember all the directions the map reader guy (Tim?) told us - I am so counting on those of you who actually know what you are doing to lead the rest of us

- fun Matt from ML, pod-mate, keeping me sane during the "this is how you read a compass" drill - dude, I am hitching onto your kayak when you aren't looking

- and more from Pod 8 - the cartoon they drew after the "this is the water route you want to follow" segment was a rip - weren't you sending me a copy of that to post here ?

Next post - this past Saturday's paddle up and down the Saugatuck .... lots of pics !

Paddling the Saugatuck

Eastern Mountain Sports sponsored this great 101 level paddling trip that I signed up for way back when - the day I rented my first Kayak. $20 for the whole shebang. Awesome. Was supposed to be a few weekends back when we had all the rains, and (thankfully) they cancelled. So we got to go out this past Saturday, in the heat. Could not have been more perfect. Jenny and Gil also signed up so I knew we'd have some big giggles. After Gil and I bonded out there at the Safety Clinic, no doubt it was going to be a blast.

So we assemble at EMS early, ready to hit the road at 10. Meet Kim, our leader for the day, and just the coolest woman on the planet. Our companions on this trip included Toby, Jeannie, Claire, Mary and Jeannie, and two other dudes whose names escape me (sorry guys!). Load up the cars and head down to the launch on the Saugatuck under 95. Yes a boat launch under 95. Who knew ?

Here's Jenny just before we put in:

And shots of the other paddlers getting ready (overheard, "if this takes any longer I'm going to need a bathroom"):

So then this very helpful stranger showed up and told us the preferred method of parking under the bridge, since of course we asked. Jenny and she recognized each other from KFAC V and started reminiscing. Jeannie our tourmate is also in this shot. She decided to focus instead on her PFD. Gil is just out of frame to your left, he decided to focus on reading the waivers very carefully.

Here it is - your first shot from the cockpit as I saw it that day! That's Gil looking very pointy but his do-rag just caught the wind. Kim is next to him asking his advice on how she should hold her paddle. Jenny is over to the right.

In blogger time, it doesn't seem like such a big deal, but here's the very welcome view of the bridge on Route 1 with all those lovely flags. That's Toby ahead of me. This point was our turn around spot. Next time you get off 95 on exit 17 (I know all my readers are Dunville's regulars, its ok, you can admit it) - pay attention to how long it takes you to *drive* to the intersection with Route 1. Just for me.

And it got even closer. Kim told me to wait there and get her a double skim latte at Starbucks. Loved this girl. Gil is under the bridge and Jenny is to the left (looking for a bar I believe).

Kim informed me that it was unusual to be able to pass under the bridge due to the tides. So under we went ! I want you all to look down next time you cross that bridge. It was so very cool. But the water? Pretty gross. More motivation to *not* dump over. Ewwwwww.

Here we are - the lot of us, taking a breather and re-assembling. Left to right, Claire, Toby, Kim.

And Gil. Feeling strong. Looking more like a pro than we did last week in that farking safety clinic. I think he's happy I didnt remember the camera last time.

Requisite photo of me looking all relaxed and happy. Click and it gets bigger. Actually they all do but I know you didn't wonder that until now. But they do.

Here's the view heading back towards 95. Don't look down at that water. And for Gods sakes, don't click *this* pic to look closer at what's floating in that water.

OK so the reason you didnt get any pics of the trip back before this shot is that the wind was going against us. It started not being fun. I started thinking "What on earth am I undertaking trying to cross the bloody sound??" Started freaking out a little bit. Fighting wind aint fun. And then ....

Helpful parking attendant lady comes up on my left, going the opposite direction and yells "You've got rowers behind you!" - and I say "thank you" and turn around and HOLY CRAP these four guys are flying furiously towards me, full four body speed ahead, and I hear "KAYAKER!" and I start thinking "um, who's the one rowing backwards, dudes" but got my little butt outta the way anyway. I am having a flashback now of them crashing into Gil - is that true ? Gil was ahead of me so it must have been on their way up - before they turned around and careened towards me.

So needless to say, sweet westporty kids that they are, they rowed on by but didn't hit me. I think they wanted me to thank them for being so considerate. I felt like I do when I ski nowadays, and get skimmed by snowboarders going 140 MPH. Old and slow. Lovely. If anyone can clarify exactly what I should have done in that situation (no rear view, I didnt hear them coming, had no idea they were there, but *they* were the ones going backwards) please enlighten me. Took a pic of them over my shoulder.

And this was kinda fascinating, too. What appeared to be lobster traps by the thousand stacked up under the 95 bridge. Who knew ? Tell me the story if you know it.

And here I am coming into the basin. So pretty even though it doesnt seem so from this pic. Rode part of the way with Claire, a hearty chick who acts half her age. Talk about an inspiration for me! Might see her out with us for KFAC VII!

Apparently about half of our group didn't make it back past the 95 bridge. Kim caught up to those of us in the basin (me and Claire, and Jen, Gil and Toby) and asked us to paddle back as we were going to head back. All in all, Kim said we paddled about 5 miles. Not bad, and once I got myself in the right head space to paddle against the wind (that was about when Claire caught up to me) I felt great, and could have kept going for a while. That was a good feeling !

Here's Gil and Toby tying two boats onto the roof of my Heep for the ride back to EMS.

Mary and Jeannie were patiently waiting for the Big Boys to help them. Ends up all they needed was me and my arm wrestling strength to get that tandem boat up on their car. Yee hah ! And get this - Mary's boat was a Mothers Day gift from her kids! Hint hint Kate, they just released the prices for the KFAC boats post-event. I am sure you can hide it somewhere until next May.

Here's the KFAC crew with Kim before we all said our goodbyes. Thanks for a great day Kim - and keep us in mind next time you organize a trip anywhere! And that's Jenny's kayak on top of her car. She felt strongly that her kayak should also be included in the photo.

And here's our group without the two dudes who remain nameless who took off before the rest of us. Great day, and thanks Mary and Jeannie and Claire for sponsoring us! You guys were great and we want you in KFAC VII in 2007 !

Left to right, Claire, Jeannie 1, Mary, Kim (squatting) Jeannie 2, me (squatting) Toby, Jen and Gil.

Back on line - didja miss me ?

If I were smart I'd figure out how to have the Pink Floyd "hello, is there anybody out there" play when you read this - hoping some of you are still interested - so just hear it in the background as you read ...

Never buy a Dell. But really, how exciting is it for you to read about my running ? I thought so. Pauses mostly due to boring content, graduating the child, PC outage, and busy life as the business has really picked up.

Shouting out to Aunt Teri and Uncle George, Yangster, and Allison B for getting me to $2500 and putting me back to #5 on the leaderboard! KFAC totals are over $192K - this is incredible. Awesome - thank you all. One more dollar and I get to "KFAC Commander of the Fleet ($2,501.00 - $10,000.00)" level which apparently entitles me to the following (Miles, you better be ready for this): "If you can raise money like this, you can have the bullhorn in the morning of the launch." Heh. I'd prefer it during the Wailer party but I guess there's a reason they don't encourage that.

A few quick points about donations:
1) Any of you who can get corporate matching donations, please do as they will dial up my totals too.
2) Anyone who donated $150+ gets a ticket to the wailer / lobstah party post-event. Not $100 as originally thought. Scully fan club membership not required but encouraged.
3) KFAC is still recruiting volunteers. If you are interested in helping out on land, let me know and I'll hook you up with Sophia.

Check out that smoke free counter, kids - and I am at the point where I really don't miss them at all, even after a few cocktails. Very close to 100 days - anyone care to celebrate that with me ?

Bought the medicine ball. Keeping my balance was hysterically funny. Getting better daily. Feel like a total dork however. lol

So now onto the part you have all been waiting for: I (with much advice, support and laughs from sweet Jenny) got out on the water - in a kayak - for the first time on Father's day! And guess what folks - I *loved* it!

Rented the boat from EMS in Fairfield, with help from the delightful Emilia (ask for her, tell her we are friends - she ROCKS). Jenny being all ambitious got out on Saturday. I had a long late (albeit fun) night working Friday, so an early start on Saturday was not in the cards for me. Sunday however was a different story.

Decided to put in at Lordship, off the beach at Marnicks. Amazing how many people want to talk to you when you have one of these boats on your car. I compared it to pushing a baby carriage - everyone wants to be your friend and hear about your baby - and give you loads of unsolicited advice. One guy told me that I *must* do an eskimo roll *before* I need to. Um, ok, I'll get right on that, buddy.

Once we got through the murk and goop at the shore, we were IN and OUT! If you recall it was a bloody hot one, but on the water, it was perfection. Except - where are the pics - I know you are asking yourselves..... and the bad news, the only bad news of the day, is that the camera made the trip, but the batteries were DOA. But, next time, I'll take LOTS and share them with you here.

So off the Lordship beach, down towards Bridgeport (no hypodermic needle sightings - whew) but strangely, and perhaps because it was Dads Day, the beaches were EMPTY. Good for us, tho - no audiences, no hecklers, you know what I am saying. Down and around for about an hour, Jenny being the experienced pro that she is, gently coaching me like the buddy she is, and pretty soon scully's got the hang of it. Digging with my paddles, moving my arms and my torso and using the strength in my back as if I really know what I am doing. Felt GREAT and STRONG - guess all this fat burning and strength / stamina training is paying off a bit. Whew.

No dumps, no capsizing, no drama, just fun fun fun and lots of giggles with Jen. Biggest dilemma was - after murky water walking - how to shake that crud off my feet and not bring it all into the boat with me. Haven't figured that one out yet. Any ideas are welcome.

Came back in after a few hours, a picnic on some random beach (empty except for a few walkers) and some good exercise and sunshine. Then soaked in Brothers Pool - ahhh jets on the lower back. Heaven.

For anyone interested, EMS Fairfield is offering a Kayak 101 trip this coming Saturday morning. I'll be there, and the camera will make this trip, too - so stay tuned! Just over a month until launch - and lots of activities and team building to come, so I promise the updates will be more fun and frequent.

T minus two months (yikes)

under two months now until race day ... even tho I refuse to think of it as a "race" - therefore something I can lose - it's more a "challenge" right ?

oh and just in case anyone has noticed, I am *#5* on the leaderboard now ... sigh .... but that is goodness, because the more money we all raise, the better for all the charity recipients .... at least that's what I tell myself while damning that Tom Cerio ....

and personal victories count, check out that smoke-free counter ! 76 bloody freaking days without a puff ! yeah I am stoked .... no reason to go back now, ever .... thank you all !!

has it gotten crazy hot lately or what ? And don't laugh, but when the temptation kicks in hard (which, ugh, it still does) I think of all of you. I think of those of you who are really rooting for me to kick this almost as much as you are rooting for me to touch the shores of Long Island in July. I will.

Madonna arms are developing but what is UP with my calves ? Suddenly - no lie - one day they were *rock hard* - YEEE HAH!! RIPPED. Sigh. Might explain the dramatic increase in spam hitting my email too.

Ran today when I came home from working - will be back out there tomorrow too. Met so many great people, will try to capture it all here. If I got your name wrong, just let me know and I'll correct it.

Walked in with Jen, my inspiration who finished last year after I bailed. No assigned seat, so we saw two other women at a table, went to introduce ourselves, and lo and behold - it's Audrey Yu! Who apparently is now back at #1 due to a technicality. Best part of that is that it benefits all the charities that we also met last night. More on that later - but for now, here's a shot of me and Audrey with (from left) Michael Wolfe from generous sponsor [GQ], Audrey, Miles (co-founder and Master Motivator), Ryan Moran (Charity Committee and old buddy), me, and Chris Fuentes from generous sponsor [Nautica].

And thanks, GQ and Nautica for the gift bags! And did I hear something about the top fundraising teams and individuals being featured in a future GQ spread? hmm....

I wish you all could have heard what I heard from each of the charities we are paddling to support - talk about motivational. First up were my table mates, the team from [Save the Sound], Myron Alderman and Don Strait, shown below with Jenny from the Block.

Apparently there is a proposed liquefied natural gas storage facility proposed for the middle of the sound - 10-stories tall, four football fields long, and 180-ft. wide. Now I will admit to not subscribing to any local papers, but how did I miss that ? Funds raised from KFAC will go towards fighting this, and I'll be thinking of how lovely this monstrosity will look as I paddle across in July.

Next up was Ginger from [Courage to Speak]. Ginger spoke of losing her son Ian to drugs, and her commitment to getting families to openly discuss drug abuse and prevention. As I train for the event, I'll be thinking of all the good work this organization will do with your support. Thank you, Ginger, for inspiring us all. Here's Ginger and her team - and some of them are paddling too!

We heard from Terry O'Connor of the [Cardinal Shehan Center], a Bridgeport-based organization that reaches out to moderate and low income youth via educational, recreational, cultural, and social programs. We met Rock Star Ashley, Shehan Center scholarship recipient and current Kolbe Cathedral freshman, one of the many fortunate Shehan Center beneficiaries. Here's the team (sorry I didn't get all the names, but Ashley is second from left, Terry second from right):

Linda Rapp from [Hole in the Wall Gang] was next, and told us about the programs they offer to children with cancer and other serious illnesses and conditions. They give these kids a camping experience of the highest quality, while extending year-round support to their families and health care providers. Here's Linda and some friends:

[Cancer Care], national nonprofit organization that provides free, professional support services for anyone affected by cancer, spoke about their programs and services in Connecticut. Unfortunately I didn't get any pictures of their group. If anyone has some, please send over.

Last but not least, the [Make a Wish Foundation] talked of the wishes they fulfill for children with life-threatening medical conditions and their families. Their representative (again, no photos but send some over if anyone has some) read a letter from a mom about how much their wish meant to their family. Another great organization that I am so proud to paddle for.

Another fun apect of the evening was meeting other fellow paddlers and volunteers. And you never know who you might run into .... case in point, the illustrious Kate Berg, president of the [Ave B ] social club, and former Gartner associate (back when it was fun). Here's Jen, me and Kate -

Speaking of former Gartner pals, Ryan Moran - chief charity guy - and Paul Parker - repeat paddler - were also in attendance. Great to see you guys again! Rose, where were you? Here's Jenny and Ryan, and Paul and Karen of [Performance Technologies]:

Now here's the best part - meeting new fun interesting people. I mentioned meeting Audrey, and her friend Mary (also a terciary connection to Gartner - who knew?). Mary wasn't down with photos, so you'll have to use your imagination. Sophia, who will volunteer at the event, was Jen's and my new best friend. Sophia and Kate of [Ave B] are running the volunteer effort for KFAC this year (and hopefully in future years) and [Ave B] will have a significant presence both on the water and behind the scenes at the event. She also makes the most beautiful custom designed silk handbags .... I see a few of those in my future. Worst picture ever of me, but Sophia deserves a shout out:

Also met Scott, co-founder and very chill guy. My fundraising and blogging reputation definitely preceeded me here as Scott immediately thanked me for funds raised so far (so thank YOU) and actually sounded like he had read/skimmed the blog. We also learned that there is a KFAC starting up in the SF bay this fall and I was all ready to get fired up until they mentioned sharks. Not quite that hard core. Yet. Here's me and Scott and [oops didnt get your name?].

At one point in the evening, safety maven Shirleen passed around crazy hats - I believe I was wearing a pirate hat for a bit, but alas, no photos of that (oh snap). Mom, Shirleen is the person who will teach me kayak safety - so when I make it across, you can thank her.

I did snap one of my adorable table neighbor wearing hers (is that a flamingo?) - great smile, you are SO working that duck, girl.

Also met fellow Nutty Paddler Don Demaine, member of Team [they wouldnt tell me], none of whom wanted to be blogged except Don. Hmmm. Keep reading, Don - loved hearing that you were a fan. See you out there!

Jen reconnected with fellow veteran paddler Melanie, and we also met the uber cool Liz - who will lose her KFAC virginity with me. I think I see a pod forming .... what do you say, ladies?

Thanks KFAC for a great evening, I am so fired up, and even though I didn't run today I'll be back out there tomorrow with all this good stuff pushing me to go even further.

momentum

so since topping the leaderboard - the donations have been pouring in - I am so moved by all of the support - cannot begin to tell you how motivating it is

last night I even got to introduce my folks to the 21st century - and the concept of blogging - can't wait until they post comments here :)

woke up this morning to the sound of a lovely voice (albeit over the phone) - got out of bed and immediately put on the sneeks - Katie Couric be damned ! Case in point rookie paddler Eileen Scully, who precociously made the leader board this week. She has begun chronicling her training regimen and various other personal improvement goals on her own Blog, and by all accounts the donation results are fabulous. Nice job, Eileen.

I am hoping "nutter" is a kayak term for "hardcore fundraiser." They talked about my blog. First. And BFab got a shout out! I am committed. And nothing personal, Audrey Yu, but you're going down .....

If anyone from KFAC is reading this - say HI and I'll see you at the kickoff bash on Friday!

more later ....

April Fools, and Changing Clocks

First confession: took friday and saturday mornings off - I'll leave you to wonder why. Got back on it Sunday. Woke up slightly confused by the time change, but since I am rarely tethered to clocks (haven't had one in the bedroom for a few years now) I decided not to care, and put the sneeks on and hit the pavement. Got to the point where I am about half running, half walking now. When I got back, I looked at the cable box (the only reliable source for accurate time) and it was only 6:15. For those of you who know me, this is highly unusual behavior. I only get moving at 6:15 when I have a plane to catch or something.

Kept the mojo working by brewing the coffee and doing another 20 with crazylady (buns and thighs - figure I should also get Madonnas abs and ass, too, while I am at it). Felt great, fixed the coffee and some eggs, turned on the opera digital music channel on my TV (what is *that* about - I know) and climbed into the big chair to read "Flyboys." Woke up two hours later, around 10am. Laughing.

This morning, same thing, up earlier than ever, colder out there and for whatever reason was walking more than running today but I got out. Note the days ticking off the smoke counter - how great is that ?

Also huge thanks to all the recent sponsors. You guys do more to inspire me than you know. I just think, if I gave me a donation and knew that I was sitting on my rump smoking I'd be pretty disappointed. So I'm out - and you're helping me do it.

Perhaps - in April - I'll get into a kayak?

It begins ..... whoo hoo!!

Starting Monday, I've signifcantly changed my morning routine from:

- wake up, oftentimes on the couch with the TV still on
- make coffee, feed cat
- first cig while trolling through my email accounts
- drink half a pot of coffee with ass on couch until I realize I am starving at noon

Monday, weather was gorgeous, so here's what changed:

- woke up in my bed, windows open, breezes blowing, sun shining (I realize those last two are not within my control, no matter how positively they affect my motivation) at about 6am
- made coffee, fed cat
- sneeks on, hair up - broke out and took a brisk run/walk about a mile or so around the 'hood
- back home, threw the "buns and thighs" pilates DVD in and burned with crazylady for 20 mins
- made my first cup of coffee and fixed a yogurt/granola bowl
- checked the email

What I learned -

1) MJ "dont stop 'til you get enough" is a great workout tune
2) dont look down when you trot on the more well travelled roads - its icky to see what people anonymously toss out their windows
3) smokers lungs make a 36yr old feel like at 56 yr old - working back to PINK
4) the hill on Overlook Drive should be sooner rather than later in my trek - at least for now
5) sunshine on my shoulders makes me happy - so do crocuses !
6) I have done this every morning this week and I already feel stronger, faster, better every day

New interim goal - be running this route at a good pace by the time the forsythia is in bloom.

Tonight it'll be two weeks with no smokes.

Anyone have ideas for strength training I can do at home ? The bigger those numbers get, the more inclined I will be to maintain it. Especially knowing you are watching it too.

It's been bloody cold here, and even tho that's no excuse, I haven't gotten out to start the burn yet. Within 24 hours I'll have Katy do the measurements and post them here so we can track it all together. Wish I had access to a gym for weight training but I can improvise. You guys are amazing. I am so fired up ! Many thanks to Richard Fouts, for throwing in an extra donation in order that I reach that goal. "I realized my contribution got you to 475 and then I thought, SHIT ... I HAVE TO BE THE ONE THAT GETS HER TO 500."

Also, biggest laugh of the day goes to Michael Shea for honoring Don Knotts, beloved to us all, in his space on the scroll. I'll have to find a way to commemorate Don on race day.

Hopefully I had my last smoke on the way to pick up Katy at the airport last night. Told her of my quest and she is very excited to assist me in my conditioning. When she wakes up around noon, we'll go for a run (or brisk walk in my case, at least to start). I'll let you know how it goes.

Now I'm Committed

So this morning around 11am, I sent the following message to my dear friends and family:

I've signed up for a charity event that involves kayaking across LI sound in July. Yes, me, the girl who hasn't had a sweaty workout in, well let's just say years. Hopefully that's all about to change. And I've always wanted "madonna arms" .........

I have about four months to learn how to get into a kayak, how to paddle, how to hold my breath under water, and row like a maniac to get across the approximately 6 mile* course. Right now I've only got my own registration fee at stake. I am reaching out to you to inspire me - sponsor me, blow my goal of raising $500 out of the water - and I'll be sure to make you all proud.

Kayak for a Cause supports many worthy charities, including Make a Wish (close to my dad's heart) and many others on both the national level (AHA, National Breast Cancer Coalition) and local (Shehan Center, Save the Sound).

If you do, I'll be sure to apprise you all of my progress, and maybe even some humorous photos. Trust me, it will be well worth whatever sponsorship you choose. No minimum donations. Anonymous donations also accepted. Just get me in the water.

If you want to help - go to the following site:

http://www.kayakforacause.com/

Select "Enter KFAC VI site"

Then on the left side menu, select "Sponsor Participant"

Enter "SCULLY" in the last name field

and check back frequently to see your collective contributions grow

and THANK YOU !

And before I knew it, I was at half of my meager $500 fundraising goal. Big thanks to Linda and Bobby Shea, first responders. And of course Jennifer, my inspiration from last year, on whom I bailed - that will *not* happen this year.

So now the blog - I intend to track my training progress, with all it's fits and starts, and let you all know my personal goals as of today - looking out towards that July 29th event date.

Raise money for the KFAC charities, many of which we have all supported sporadically over the years

Madonna arms - never overrated

General tone and strength in my lungs and legs - abs would be a great by product of all this too

Stop smoking - yes once and for all, now that I'm past mid-thirties, its no longer optional

So it begins. Now to devise the training schedule, take some measurements (and yes I will share and chart progress on those too), and photos photos photos of said progress. Especially that first day I tumble into a kayak, and of course some of me disembarking on the beaches of Long Island Sound.

Stay tuned !

* I just learned that, um, the course is 13.5 miles, not six. There are rescue boats. Whew.
